VIENNA, Austria – The No. 9 U.S. Women’s National Indoor Team earned a spot in the 2025 Rohrmax Cup final, after defeating No. 10 Poland. A tied game through the third quarter, USA pulled away in the final frame for the 8-5 win.
Just 23 seconds into the contest, USA found themselves trailing after a quick goal from Poland. Midway through the United Eagles earned a penalty corner, the attempt by Reese D’Ariano (West Chester, Pa.) went off Poland’s post player giving USA a penalty stroke. Erin Matson (Chadds Ford, Pa.) stepped up and converted to even it at 1-1. In the 9th minute, Poland had an identical scenario – earning a penalty stroke after a corner. This time, USA goalkeeper Liz Tamburro (Phoenixville, Pa.) made the save.
Although both sides had some good looks in the second quarter, the score remained tied at 1-1.
Two minutes inside the third quarter, D’Ariano scored off a penalty corner to put USA ahead, 2-1. The 28th minute saw both teams score – first D’Ariano for USA and then Poland tallied off a set piece. With 18 seconds to go, Poland equalized off a penalty corner to bring it to 3-3.
It took USA only 8 seconds into the final frame to regain the lead when Opal Sparling (Chester Springs, Pa.) tucked in a low angled shot. A minute later, D’Ariano used her speed down the right side and scored into the far boards to make it 5-3. The Eagles extended their lead in the 34th minute off a D’Ariano penalty corner goal. Poland answered quickly to make it 6-4, but not before D’Ariano picked off a defender, ran forward and pulled around the goalkeeper to put another one in.
In the 38th minute Poland brought it to 7-5 but it was USA who had the final goal, a minute later, from D’Ariano into an open net, 8-5.
The Eagles will play in the final tomorrow at 6:40 a.m. ET against No. 8 Belgium.
