VIENNA, Austria – The No. 9 U.S. Women’s National Indoor Team and No. 8 Belgium met in the final at the 2025 Rohrmax Cup in Vienna, Austria. Although the Red Panthers previously beat USA in pool play, the Eagles reversed the outcome claiming a 7-4 victory.
"The team is coming together in a good way," commented Jun Kentwell, Indoor USWNT Head Coach, following the game. "We are young but they played mentally strong."
USA wasted no time to get on the board. Just 35 seconds into the contest, Erin Matson (Chadds Ford, Pa.) weaved her way through the middle of the court, slotted it forward and Reese D’Ariano (West Chester, Pa.) reverse flipped it into the net. Belgium responded by putting the Eagles’ defensive unit under pressure, but they held strong behind goalkeeper Liz Tamburro (Phoenixville, Pa.). Action went circle-to-circle for a period before USA added to their lead in the 6th minute. Opal Sparling (Chester Springs, Pa.) and Sydney Mandato (Telford, Pa.) were on the Belgium goalkeeper’s pads and after two attempts, Sparling put it in. USA held the 2-0 lead at the break.
Similar to the first quarter, USA got on the board early in the second through a low angled flick from Charly Bruder (Malvern, Pa.). Just two minutes later, D’Ariano sent it high into the net to extend the red, white and blue’s lead. Belgium made it 4-2 by scoring penalty corner goals in the 13th and 15th minutes. The Red Panthers brought it within one with two minutes to go before halftime, after picking it off the right boards and finding a striker at the top of the circle to finish. That didn’t phase the USA, as with just seconds to go before the break, Bruder created and scored to make it 5-3.
Thirty seconds into the third frame, Matson received a green card for drilling, and simultaneously Belgium pulled their goalkeeper for the extra on-court player. Fortunately, the Red Panthers couldn’t capitalize but in the 27th minute, tallied the only goal of the quarter to make it 5-4.
Two minutes into the final frame, USA extended their lead when Matson passed it through the legs to D’Ariano for the finish. Shortly after, Belgium earned a penalty corner, but Abby Burnett (Zionsville, Pa.) made the save off the goal line. In the 38th minute, USA secured the victory after converting on a set piece, through D’Ariano, to make the final 7-4.
During the awards ceremony, Reese D'Ariano was named the women's top goalscorer, finishing the tournament with 22 goals.
Next, the Eagles will be heading to the 2025 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup taking place February 3 to 9 in Poreč, Croatia. The roster for this event will be named in the next two weeks.
