MANAHAWKIN, N.J. - As the whistle blows and the game begins, one figure has stood unwavering at the center of it all for nearly five decades: Linda Pesotski. In 2025, Linda will celebrate a monumental milestone - her 50th year as a field hockey umpire. While many in the sport know her as a dedicated umpire, those lucky enough to work with her, play under her, or be mentored by her know Linda as much more - a fearless leader, a moral compass, and a beloved friend.

“I’ve known Linda as an official since I played in high school and college,” shared Rebecca Maciejewski, Honesdale High School Head Coach, “but what I’m most proud of is calling her my friend during my 21 years of coaching. She’s timeless, fearless, humble, and a staple in our hometown league in Pennsylvania.”

Linda’s resume is as expansive as her influence. She’s worked games from the junior high level all the way up through high school state playoffs and collegiate matches. She’s not only a USA Field Hockey Level II Outdoor Umpire but has also been a USA Field Hockey member since 1999. For 27 years, she’s served as the assigner of officials for the Wyoming Valley Conference’s Indoor Tournament, helping to keep the game running and mentoring countless younger officials along the way.

But beyond the certifications, titles, and tournaments, Linda embodies the soul of sport. “She’s a ray of sunshine that loves the sport,” Maciejewski said. “Even in today’s climate of official shortages and pressure-filled sidelines, Linda continues to show up with integrity and joy. She’s tiny - but mighty - and she stands tall in every way that matters.”

Officiating, as many know, is a path less taken - underrepresented, often under-appreciated, and increasingly understaffed. That makes Linda’s 50 years of unwavering service all the more inspiring. “Without officials, there is no opportunity for sport,” Maciejewski explained. “Thinking of all the opportunity Linda has afforded athletes in our area over the last five decades - it’s absolutely mind-blowing.”

Linda’s philosophy is simple but profound: do what’s right, and do it with grace. “She believes in doing good. She stands up for what’s right. And she does it all with sportsmanship, grit, and usually a well-timed joke,” Maciejewski added. “If you need her, she’s there. Nothing is too hard - she’ll find a way to work through it.”

It’s rare to find someone who not only officiates games, but genuinely celebrates the success of the teams and communities involved. “She officiates, but she also cheers. She supports. She pushes us to be better. The field hockey world is rooted in people like Linda - and it continues to grow because of people like her.”

Here’s to 50 years of fairness, friendship, and fierce commitment. Here’s to Umpire Linda Pesotski.
