VIENNA, Austria – The No. 9 U.S. Women’s National Indoor Team kicked off play at the 2025 Rohrmax Cup against Austria U-21. After taking an early lead, the Eagles never trailed and fought off a consistent attack from Austria for the 5-3 win.
Early in the match, after Austria forced USA goalkeeper Liz Tamburro (Phoenixville, Pa.) to make a save, Reese D’Ariano (West Chester, Pa.) immediately countered and used individual skill to put the United Eagles up, 1-0. On the ensuing play, USA earned their first penalty corner, which D’Ariano converted. Austria responded a few minutes later by producing their own set piece, where the shot was deflected wide. With just under two minutes before the break, Austria added one back to make it 2-1, and had a missed penalty corner chance.
Austria put on the pressure to start the second quarter, testing USA’s defense. Action was back-and-forth for a bit until the 17th minute when the Eagles extended their lead. After a deep, defensive outlet found D’Ariano, she utillized her speed to perfectly thread the ball through for Sydney Mandato (Telford, Pa.) to finish. Less than a minute later, D’Ariano tallied a hat trick, off a pass from Mandato, to make it 4-1.
Just 30 seconds into the third quarter, Austria cut the margin to 4-2, passing the ball around Tamburro. Play was static for a portion of time before USA registered a shot and penalty corner in the 28th minute. Although the initial attempt was stopped by a rushing Austria goalkeeper, the red, white and blue produced two more set pieces. Despite the chances, the scoreline remained 4-2 heading into the fourth.
D'Ariano made it 5-2 in the 32nd minute after chasing down a ball, which was passed from Erin Matson (Chadds Ford, Pa.) and tucking it into the far corner. Midway through the final frame, Austria converted with a shot into the top of the net off a penalty corner. With just 48 seconds to go, Austria earned yet another set piece, but the score concluded at 5-3 in favor of USA.
The Eagles have two contests tomorrow, first at 4:20 a.m. ET against No. 2 Croatia and then at 11:20 a.m. ET versus No. 8 Belgium.
