TORONTO, Canada - It was an action packed day to kick off the fifth annual CanAm Indoor Series at the University of Toronto in Toronto, Canada. Following the first day, consisting of twelve total games, the USA Youth Women and Senior Women led the way with two wins each.
Youth Men #
Game 1: USA 0 - 6 Canada #
The U.S. U-19 Men's National Indoor Team faced a tough Canada Akpro Select squad. The hosts took control in the 5th minute and never turned back. They put up three more goals in the second frame - one each of a field goal, penalty corner and penalty stroke. Canada added to their lead with one in each of the remaining frames for the win.
Game 2: USA 1 - 7 Canada #
It was a similar fate for the U-19 Indoor USMNT in their second match of the day, falling by a goal differential of six to the Canada Akrpo Select team again. Canada scored at least once in every quarter, holding a 6-0 lead in the final minutes. USA narrowly avoided being shutout when Zachary Canady (Suffolk, Va.) tallied off a penalty corner with time expired.
Youth Women #
Game 1: USA 7 - 1 Canada #
The U.S. U-17 Women's National Indoor Team had a comfortable victory over Canada to start the tournament, behind a hat-trick from Finley Davidson (Stevensville, Md.) USA jumped to an early 2-0 lead after the first quarter with field goals from Madelynn Stahl (Palmyra, Pa.) and Davidson. Canada cut the margin in the 16th minute, but the Junior Eagles responded a minute later when Rebecca Block (Newtown Square, Pa.) brought it to 3-1. USA went on the score four unanswered goals - three field goals and a penalty corner - in the third period for the win.
Game 2: USA 10 - 0 Canada #
It was another dominant performance from the U-17 Indoor USWNT, as they had a 10-0 shutout over Canada in their second match of the day. USA's Kiera Sack (Havertown, Pa.) put on a stellar showing, starting with back-to-back goals in the opening quarter. It only took until minute 12 for Sack to tally a hat trick, and goals from Cordelia Blanc (New Canaan, Conn.) and Elise Reagan (Royersford, Pa.) put the red, white and blue up 5-0 before halftime. One minute into the third, Sack found the back of the net a fourth time, and Stahl tallied shortly after. Cotinuing to display their offensive proweress, USA finished out the frame with goals from Block and Regean and a 9-0 lead. A penalty stroke made by Sack in the final frame, her fifth goal of the match, pushed USA to their 10-0 victory.
Senior Men #
Game 1: USA 2 - 5 Canada #
The U.S. Men's National Indoor Team dropped their first contest to Canada's Akpro Senior Select Indoor Team. Canada opened the scoring in the 2nd minute through a field goal and held that lead through the first quarter. In the 14 th minute, Bennet Nobereit (Koenigstein, Germany) evened it at 1-1. Canada put up three goals in the 23rd and 24th minutes to take a comfortable lead. USA added one back back through Gerald Cutone (Middleton, Mass.) just before halftime to cut it to 2-4. Canada tallied one more lone goal, in the 39th minute on a penalty corner, to bring the final to 2-5.
Game 2: USA 3 - 5 Canada #
A heartbreaking final quarter saw the Indoor USWNT drop their second match of the day to Canada. The hosts started off strong with two goals in the first quarter, then added a third off a penalty corner in the second. USA began their dramatic comeback in the final minutes of the third frame with back-to-back goals from Nobereit, putting the red, white and blue behind just 3-2. In the final 10 minutes, captain Ajai Dhadwal (Agoura Hills, Calif.) put one in off a set piece chance to tie it up. Just one minute later, USA conceded a penalty stroke, which was convereted by Canada's Gurjot Singh. A final field goal from Singh put USA back 5-3 as the final whistle blew.
Senior Women #
Game 1: USA 3 - 2 Canada #
It was a tight opening contest between the U.S. Women's National Development Indoor Team and Canada in the women's senior division. Just 2 minutes in, USA got on the board first through a penalty corner goal from Alexandra Curtis (Richmond, Va.). The United Eagles held the 1-0 lead through into halftime, before Canada evened it in the 23rd minute. USA produced back-to-back goals in the 32nd and 33rd minute, first through Morgan O'Donnell (Lincoln University, Pa.) on a set piece and then from Chase Strohm (Hummelstown, Pa.) on a penalty stroke. Canada added one back off a penalty corner, also in the 33rd minute, but USA held on for the 3-2 win.
Game 2: USA 5 - 3 Canada #
The Indoor Development USWNT had another exciting win against Canada in their second game of the day. After going down 1-0 to the hosts in the fourth minute, USA finished out the first quarter with the lead after goals from Maeve McGinley (Plymouth Meeting, Pa.) and Emily Berlinghof (Huntington, N.Y.). The red, white and blue would add to that lead to close out the second quarter, going up 3-0 thanks to Maria Armaganian (Concord, N.H.). Canada made it interesting with a penalty corner goal in the final minute of the third quarter, then tied it up at 3-3 with another tally early in the fourth. A persistant attack from USA produced two more goals, one from Strohm and another from O'Donnell, to give USA a 5-3 victory.
Masters Men #
Game 1: USA 4 - 3 Canada #
Two goals in the final quarter propelled the U.S. Men's Masters Indoor Team to an opening victory over Canada in the masters division of the CanAm Indoor Series. The match started with USA on the front foot, as a goal from Erik Enters (Harleysville, Pa.) in the 7th minute gave them a first quarter lead. Brett Andrews (Pittsburgh, Pa.) doubled USA's lead in the second to 2-0 before halftime. The third frame was all Canada -- the hosts tallied three times to take a 3-2 advantage. A field goal from Gregory Pereira (Fulton, Md.) and second goal from Enters put the Golden Eagles back on top, taking the 4-3 win.
Game 2: USA 2 - 5 Canada #
The second game of the day between Canada and the U.S. Men's Masters Indoor Team saw a flipped result. Despite taking the early lead off a goal from Fernando Diez (Key Biscayne, Fla.), USA soon found themselves a victim of Canada's penalty corner conversions. The hosts tied the contest at 1-1 in minute 14, and USA took a second lead off a goal from Enters in the next minute. Three goals in the third quarter -- two on penalty corners -- put Canada on top, and the hosts secured a 5-2 win off of a final set piece goal.
Masters Women #
Game 1: USA 1 - 1 Canada #
Despite a plethora of penalty corner chances, the U.S. Women's Masters Indoor Team finished their first match tied, 1-1, with Canada. Four set pieces in the first quarter produced no results for the Golden Eagles, and would not until five minutes into the third frame. Captain Melissa Weiss (Ann Arbor, Mich.) converted on the seventh USA penalty corner of the match to take a 1-0 lead. It looked like USA would claim an opening victory, but Canada found in the tying goal off a penalty corner in the final minute.
Game 2: USA 0 - 1 Canada #
It was redemption for the U.S. Women's Masters Indoor Team as they finished out day one with a 1-0 victory over Canada. Suzanne Bourgault (Portland, Maine) made the difference for the Golden Eagles, with a field goal in the 14th minute. The USA defense outlasted three Canada penalty corners in the second half to hold onto the win.
Tomorrow is the final day of competition, where each USA team will play one final match against their Canadian counterpart. Matches from the CanAm Indoor Series will not be live streamed.
